On many projects, my role involves generating or commissioning creative ideas. Whether developing my own ideas or working with those of others, I am well used to the process of sifting and sorting them, and choosing the best to take forward.

With this poster campaign for Quaker Week, I worked with a copywriter to generate several possible routes. Working from this list, I helped a committee of senior managers and board members decide which to take forward. I then found and commissioned a photographer, and art directed the shoot to ensure the photography did exactly what it needed to. Then I completed the poster designs and saw them through to print.

We had two weeks from selecting the idea to going to print, and only four days from completing the shoot to getting the printed posters back and ready for distribution.

I edited, designed and production managed Quaker News for five years while working for the Quakers. It is a 16-page quarterly membership magazine, distributed to around 15,000 members. I am now continuing this work on a freelance basis. My role has included: establishing and implementing a major redesign, streamlining the production process, and securing a cheaper printing contract. I work with senior managers and the communications staff at Friends House to ensure all content supports core Quaker messages.

God is Silence

With this book cover, the key word was ‘silence’ – not an easy concept to illustrate! Reading the text made me realise that the author was concerned to convey the mystical possibility of silence. Hence the misty lake does a good job of conveying stillness and mystery. I also liked the muted palette in the image, which was an affordable royalty-free photo I sourced from a stock library.

Light to Live By

With this reprint, we again had a distinctive message to get across. That ruled out cheesy sunsets or candles. The notion of ‘light’ here is to do with light as a constant reference, often blurred by the ‘passing show’ of daily life. So I found this colourful image, showing stripes of blurred light.

The Quaker annual review is a key annual communication to donors and supporters of Quaker Work. I was responsible for art direction, picture research, design, and liaison with the printer. I also co-ordinated the editing process, including final proofing and signoff by managers.

The Trustees’ Report is a key in-depth communication for Quakers. I co-ordinated the publication process for this document in 2010. My role involved managing a complex editing process with multiple sign-offs from senior managers and trustees, design and art direction, and incorporating 30 pages of audited figures at the final layout stage.

Quaker faith & practice is a key text for Quakers in Britain. Updated once in a generation, it contains over 600 pages of inspirational writing and practical advice on Quaker procedures. I led on a major redesign and update of half a dozen chapters for the 2009 edition. My role included: design and art direction (including obtaining approvals from committee members for a new cover), co-ordinating the production process and print tendering (total cost in excess of £20,000). For this project, I managed a team of two proofreaders and two typesetters as we worked to ensure all new material went into the book exactly as it should.

Luke Frazer is a self-employed kitchen designer and fitter. I came up with this bold saw image to convey his sharpness and precision. I got his business cards printed with foil blocking to make the saw shape stand out.

HSC (originally the Homeopathic Supply Company) needed a new mark to cover their expanding product range. I worked with them on brainstorming and strategy, and came up with this bold shape on a golden background. The new identity has been applied to their website, business stationery, newsletters and catalogues.
